About

The Short Version:

Mother Hen is Jodi Edwards Wright, a former moderator of a Depression forum, former teacher, mother, and all around eccentric writer/poet.

The Long Version:

Welcome to my world!

I am a wife, mother, writer, poet, former teacher, unconventional Christian, and now, a typing chicken. For a number of years I was a team leader and co-moderator of the Dealing with Depression team at SparkPeople.com. I was Senior Moderator of the DwD team for two years, during which time the group grew from a few thousand to over 500,00 members.

I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, clinical depression, and a host of other quirks and impediments, not the least of which is an almost terminal case of honesty. I have lived through divorce, abuse, single motherhood, bankruptcy, poverty, the chronic illness and eventual death of a child, the loss of my career, and a few other things not worth mentioning at the moment. Humor and faith were two anchors that helped me survive the storm.
I am now married to the most wonderful man in the world (my sympathies to all the other women out there — he’s taken), and am owned by two cats, Cosmo and Zinnia.
Hope you enjoy the ride!

  2. Dear Ms. Sunshine,

How nice of your mother to give you such a cheerful name! Mother Hen has half a mind to name one of her next brood Sunshine too.
Do you find it a lot to live up to? Just asking.

    Welcome to the nest!
    Merrily Yours,
    Mother Hen

  4. I also have Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I wrote a post about it, but it bummed all my readers out, so I took it down and made it it’s own blog. I’ve only done the one post, though. read it here: http://fibromyalgiafogblog.wordpress.com/

    • Notice that Jodi Edwards Wright has fibro and chronic fatigue, and Mother Hen does not. The former also has a blog called A Darker Shade of Blue (adarkershadeofblue.wordpress.com) where she deals with clinical depression and other serious challenges, so she gets her darker side out in print there.
Most of your posts are humorous, and that is what your readers have come to expect, so starting another blog was probably for the best. Certainly Mother Hen’s readers would be surprised to know of all the difficult issues her alter ego deals with in her life. People can’t quite understand how someone funny can have problems and trials to face.
Jodi will take a look at your fibro blog, while Mother H. gracefully declines.

  8. Okay, I had to stop by your place and peek in the windows of the one and only Mother Hen’s house, since you have already given me the courtesy. Wow, we have a lot in common! Can I brag about being depressed? Oh hell, why not? I either brag or bitch about everything else, so what’s new? Fortunately, I haven’t lost a child, which would devastate me, and can’t imagine the strength one must conjure up to survive something that tragic. I came close here recently, as my son is a drug addict, but God intervened, sent his little butt to prison, and now he is doing much better. He joked and told me not to pray for him anymore, because he said God listened to me when I told him to send him to the joint to clean him up. That’s right! Mess with mama and she calls on the Big Guy for favors! Bankruptcy…I should, but haven’t yet. I believe that’s just a matter of time. As for the rest? Well, it would be similar to mine if I wrote out another bio.
I’m going to have to do some perusing on your sight here real soon. I just decided to slow my blog down to one or two posts a week because I was getting overwhelmed and need to start focusing on the book I’m working on–fingers and toes crossed that it will sell–but I look forward to doing a sweep of your blog and checking out your wit. 🙂 Many happy days to you Mother Hen. I know I deserve them and suspect you more than do too.

    • Please do (brag about being depressed, that is)! I do all the time. It keeps people on edge, as they are never totally sure what to expect, and I like it that way!
Christian comedian Mike Warnke once said something about if you are some poor slob with an older lady out there praying for you, give up now! You are totally toast! Well, maybe he didn’t say that in so many words, but that was the gist of the matter. I truly hope that your son is on his way to a new life. Sometimes we get second (or third) chances, thank God!
The first time I was wiped out financially, thanks to my ex, it never occurred to me to declare bancruptcy. I probably would have been better off. By the second time it was, oh what the…heck. We can’t go down much farther. However, I do confess to some lingering guilt about a couple of nice ladies, our dentist and chiropractor, who got stung in the process. I hadn’t realized that we still owed them money. Obviously the religion of guilt that my mother dutifully instilled in me took.
I have always kept my two blogs to once a week each, because I also aim to fufill my apparent destiny and be a writer. At least it’s apparent to me. As you will see, however, both are more time-consuming than average, and I manage to blow a good deal of my week keeping up anyway.
Thank you for your good wishes, which I will most certainly share with Mother Hen. I wish you all the best as well!
      Cordially,
Jodi (Mother Hen’s close friend and alter ego)

      • P.S. Thank you for your sympathy. The loss of my son was (and in many ways still is) devastating, but time does soften the pain somewhat. Without my faith and my dear husband, I am sure that I wouldn’t have made it.
My son was a remarkable individual who touched many, many lives while he was with us. I am very proud to be his mother, and I can only hope to be worthy of his memory.
